Closed areas: Gap Creek and Gap Creek Falls walking tracks closed
The three walking tracks from Gap Creek picnic area are closed until mid December 2021 due to storm damage and a planned major upgrade to Gap Creek Falls walking track.
Due to the dangerous nature of the work no visitors will be permitted. Alternative bushwalks are located:

Closed areas: Campgrounds closed due to road damage and landslide
There is no visitor access to Bangalow Road due to significant road damage and a landslide. The following areas are also closed:
NPWS is currently assessing a commissioned geo-technical report on the landslide to determine the best options for repair prior to tendering for a contractor. A quote has been accepted for the road repair and this work will be completed before the end of October. The entry gate is currently locked and no visitor access is permitted.

Safety alerts: Notice of 1080 baiting
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting a 1080 baiting program using meat baits and M44 ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program is aimed at the protection of the endangered brush-tailed rock wallaby and other native animals, and to reduce attacks on domestic stock in the adjacent Congewai Valley. The program will be ongoing between Monday 11 October 2021 and Friday 15 July 2022.
The program will target the northern side of the park, including some private properties bordering the Congewai Valley with the consent of land-owners. Meat baits will also be delivered by helicopter on one day between Monday 11 October and Friday 15 October 2021.
All baiting locations will be identified by signs.
Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Safety alerts: Watagan Road - not suitable for 2WD vehicles (Cessnock Council section)
Watagan Road from the cattle grid at the southern end of Heaton Road south, uphill to the second cattle grid at the Watagans National Park boundary, is currently not suitable for 2WD vehicles. The road is rough and steep in sections because of erosion caused by rain and vehicle traffic. Take care and drive safely.

Closed areas: Click Creek fire trail and Slippery Rock Road
Click Creek fire trail is closed due to extensive storm damage. The trail will remain closed until maintenance works can be completed. Slippery Rock Road is closed due to eroded surfaces making conditions unsafe. The road will reopen, subject to consent conditions once maintenance work is completed.

Heaton State Forest

Boardering Watagan national Park, Heaton State forest is home to many great lookouts. There sre many highpoints with cliff edges giving great views across the Hunter valley and Lake Macquarie.

A large parcel of land west of the northern end of lake Macquarie, Awaba state forest lines the side of part of the Sydney - newcastle freeway. The park is home to mostly native forest
