This section of the Great North Walk starts from the Watagan creek road and winds north across the valley and up into the Watagan State Forest, following the ridge lines around the Flatrock lookout and down into the Congewai Valley, finishing at the track head at Congewai valley road. There are few unreliable water sources in this section so carrying sufficient supplies is necessary.

Track: Moderate - Bush Track
Distance = 0.3 km Time = 5 mins

From the intersection the track heads down the grass hill following the Great North Walk arrows through the paddock gate and along the fence, hugging the side of the property all the way to the end of the paddock where it comes to another paddock gate.

Track: Hard - Bush Track
Distance = 0.1 km Time = 2 mins
Climb = 1 m Descent = 0 m
from the paddock gate the track heads down the hill and straight across Watagan Creek, climbing up the other side and continuing along the fence line, crossing over it on the Styles and following it to another paddock gate.

Track: Hard - Bush Track
Distance = 0.8 km Time = 35 mins
Climb = 245 m Descent = -11 m
From the paddock gate the track follows the fence line along the bushtrack to the edge of the valley where it passes through another fence and continues up the side of the valley, zigzagging all the way to the top of the hill via both rock and wooden steps where it meets the end of Langans road.

Track: Hard - Service Trail
Distance = 0.8 km Time = 20 mins
Climb = 85 m Descent = -9 m
From the end of the road the track heads past the round about and up the hardened dirt road, continuing all the way to the top until it comes to the intersection of Harris Fire and Cabans road.

(2.07 km) Int of Harris Fire and Cabans roads to Signposted Rest Area
Track: Hard - Service Trail
Distance = 1.5 km Time = 25 mins
Climb = 45 m Descent = -24 m
From the intersection the track follows the road up the hill and all the way along the hardened dirt road, passing the Hearns road intersection and winding along the ridge to the signposted rest area.

(3.53 km) Signposted Rest Area to Flat Rock Lookout
Track: Moderate - road
Distance = 0.4 km Time = 5 mins
Climb = 21 m Descent = -16 m
From the walkers rest area the track heads north west along Cabans road down a hill and up the other side, passing the fenced off section of cliffs on the right, to the signposted rock outcrop of Flat Rock Lookout. Flat Rock Lookout is an unfenced section of cliff so care must be taken to avoid injury.

Flat Rock Lookout provides a great view over the Congewai valley, there are however no fences or safety railings at the lookout so you will need to exercise some care.

(3.89 km) Flat Rock Lookout to Int of Congewai Communications Tower Service Trail

Distance = 3.9 km Time = 1 Hrs 20 mins
Climb = 169 m Descent = -141 m
From the lookout the track continues along the hardened dirt road winding up the hill and down the other side undulating all the way along the ridge, passing all the intersections on the way until it comes to the Great North Walk signposted intersection of the Congewai communications tower service trail, just beyond the intersection of Cabans and Cedar Ridge roads.

Track: Moderate - Bush Track
Distance = 2.4 km Time = 1 Hrs 5 mins
Climb = 119 m Descent = -429 m
From the intersection the track follows the Great North Walk Congewai Valley sign up the service trail to the communications tower where it follows the Great North Walk arrows around the north side of the fence, along the bushtrack which turns down the hill and winds all the way to the bottom. From here the track undulates along through thick green forest, crossing a creek and coming up to the side of a private property opening out into a large paddock which it follows along the fence of all the way along to a paddock gate.

Track: Hard - Service Trail
Distance = 0.7 km Time = 10 mins
Climb = 7 m Descent = -42 m
From the paddock gate the track follows the Great North Walk arrows hugging the fence line all the way along the side of the private property to the end of the paddock where it follows a service trail down across a creek and up the other side, continuing over the fence on the styles and along the hardened dirt trail to the intersection of the sealed road.

(10.84 km) Int of Great North Walk and sealed road to Congewai Valley west trackhead
Track: Moderate - road
Distance = 0.9 km Time = 15 mins
Climb = 7 m Descent = -30 m
From the intersection the track follows the road north east down the hill all the way along becoming a hardened dirt road as it undulates to the Western Congewai Valley track head, at the intersection of Congewai road.
