Track Notes

Since this is a 'return' style walk once you have had enough of the walk, turn around and retrace your steps back to the start.

Drive to Int. Victoria Falls Rd and Asgard Swamp Trail East

(0 km) Int. Victoria Falls Rd and Asgard Swamp Trail East to Int. Asgard Swamp Trail and Pyramid Rock camping Trk Track: Moderate - Service Trail	Distance = 2 km	Time = 35 mins

From the car park the track passes the closed gate marked by Asgard Swamp sign and heads down the hill. After a short time the track tends left down the hill steeper, to then follow the spur for approximately 500m to a creek crossing through a swampy area. The track then heads up the hill and tends right to continue for a few hundred metres to an area between two rock outcrops, a larger one on the right.

From the intersection the track heads away from the larger rock outcrop down the hill for approximately 50m to the small pyramid shaped rock outcrop.

Pyramid Shaped Rock

Pyramid Shaped Rock, Blue Mountains NP, as the name suggests is a rock shaped like a pyramid. This rock is situated just south of Asgard Swamp next to the service trail. The campsite has a well established fire place and nicely cleared area for tents. Pyramid Shaped Rock itself adds some character to the campsite providing views over the swamp.

From the intersection the track keeps the large rocky outcrop on the right, as it follows near to its base. The track leads up a slight hill and onto a small rise, at the top of which is . If the track starts to slowly drop past this ridge on the left you have gone too far. From the intersection the track continues down a thinning and more overgrown service trail keeping the large rocky outcrop away from the track on the right. The track continues to a sign posted intersection.

(2.52 km) Int. Asgard Swamp Trail and Asgard Mine Trk to Asgard Mine Track: Hard - Bush Track	Distance = 0.2 km	Time = 5 mins

From the intersection the track follows the sign 'Asgard Swamp Coal Mine' down the hill towards the cliffs across the valley. The track winds down the hill for approximately 100m to a small creek before turning left to meet a more defined creek with a bridge. The track crosses the small bridge and turns right down the hill to where the track meets a small waterfall. This intersection is just up the gully from an overhang on the left of the track. From the intersection the track crosses the creek and follows the cliff line for approximately 10m. The track then zig zags down the hill to come back on itself as it leads down the hill. From the last step the track ducks under a log to the mine entrance in the cliff, on the left.

Asgard Mine

Asgard mine is the entrance to an old coal mine. The mine and kiln are the only heritage links to such industrial efforts of the 1860's to 1920's, in New South Wales. The mines entrance is approximately 1.6m tall and wide and expands some 30m into the hill, so pack a torch if exploring. More info

From the mine the track continues along the cliff line keeping the cliffs to the left of the track. The track crosses the creek to the north and contours around the base of the cliffs for approximately 20m to the overgrown kiln.

Asgard Kiln
	Alt = 828
Asgard kiln is an old coke oven which was used in the processing of the coal. The oven looks as though it has never been used, with a clean set of bricks inside and sandstone blocks on the outside. The oven is overgrown although the entrance is still clear. More info
