Basin campsite to Watagan creek road

This section of the Great North Walk starts from the Basin campsite in the Olney State Forest and winds north into the Watagan's, via the Warrawolong Flora Reserve. This track also offers a side trip from Turners road right up to the top of Mt Warrawolong, which is the highest point along the Great North Walk. The track also finishes at the Watagan creek road, this walk also gives a nice opportunity for that quiet drive in the country.

Basin Campsite

This is a large camping area on the Great North walk and is accessible by car. The campsite provides a range of facilities like a pit toilet, picnic tables and chairs, barbeque plates and fire places. Water is available from a nearby creek, treat before use.

From the Basin campsite the track follows the Great North Walk sign along the bushtrack which runs up through the eucalypt forest into the saddle where it meets the signposted intersection of Rock Lilly and Lyrebird trails.

(0.28 km) Int of Rock Lilly and Lyrebird trails to Int of Great North Walk and Basin campsite tracks
Track: Moderate - Bush Track
Distance = 1.6 km Time = 35 mins
Climb = 103 m Descent = -95 m
From the intersection the track heads down the saddle following the Lyrebird trail sign and winds up and down the side of the valley through lush green forest, crossing several small tributaries and coming to the intersection of the Great North Walk and Basin campsite tracks.

(1.91 km) Int of Great North Walk and Basin campsite tracks to Int of Great North Walk and return to Basin tracks
Track: Hard - Bush Track
Distance = 0.5 km Time = 15 mins
Climb = 64 m Descent = -73 m
From the intersection the track heads north through the bush, following the Great North Walk sign along the thin bushtrack, winding its way up and down the side of the hill to the signposted intersection of the Great North Walk and Return to Basin tracks.

(2.38 km) Int of Great North Walk and return to Basin tracks to Rest area
Track: Hard - Bush Track
Distance = 0.9 km Time = 30 mins
Climb = 167 m Descent = -4 m
From the intersection the track follows the Great North Walk sign up the wooden steps and along the side of the valley winding back down the bottom at a water hole in the Wollombi Brook where it crosses a tributary and zigzags up the other side all the way to the top of the hill flattening out and following a service trail to an unsignposted rest area not long after.

(3.24 km) Rest area to Int of Great North Walk and alternate route to Walkers Ridge road
Track: Hard - Bush Track
Distance = 2.4 km Time = 45 mins
Climb = 94 m Descent = -60 m
From the rest area the track heads steeply up the hill and along the defined trail through thick eucalypt forest, flattening out for a short while and continuing steeply up to the top of the ridge after which it follows the trail along the ridgeline all the way to the intersection of the Great North Walk and an alternate route to Walkers Ridge forest road

(5.68 km) Int of Great North Walk and alternate route to Walkers Ridge road to End of Kangaroo Point road
Track: Hard - Bush Track
Distance = 0.7 km Time = 20 mins
Climb = 84 m Descent = -102 m
From the intersection the track follows the Great North Walk arrows down through thick forest, zigzagging all the way down to the bottom of the valley where it crosses a creek and heads back up the other side, winding all the way up the hill until it comes to the end of Kangaroo Point road marked with a Great North Walk arrow in the middle of the track.

Distance = 1.3 km Time = 35 mins
Climb = 147 m Descent = -10 m
From the end of Kangaroo Point road the track heads straight up the service trail following it through thick green forest, all the way to the intersection of Murrays forest road.

(7.7 km) Int of Kangaroo Point and Murrays forest road to Rest Area
Track: Hard - road, servicetrail
Distance = 0.8 km Time = 15 mins
Climb = 19 m Descent = -54 m
From the intersection the track follows the Great North Walk arrow along Murrays forest road heading north east for a short while until it comes to the intersection of the Great North Walk at the Bar trail.
From the intersection the track heads north along the service trail following the Great North Walk arrow to the next Great North Walk sign and continues up a bushtrack until it flattens out and winds down to the top of a ridgeline which it follows through an open wooded forest to the unsignposted rest area at the end of the ridge.

(8.48 km) Rest Area to Int of Great North Walk and Bar trail
Track: Hard - Service Trail
Distance = 0.2 km Time = 5 mins
Climb = 4 m Descent = -44 m
From the rest area the track heads down the end of the ridge towards Mt Warrawolong steeply into a saddle until the track winds along through thicker green forest to the intersection of the Bar trail.

(8.72 km) Int of Great North Walk and Bar trail to Int of Bar trail and Warrawolong road
Track: Hard - Bush Track
Distance = 0.8 km Time = 15 mins
Climb = 27 m Descent = -57 m
From the intersection the track follows the Great North Walk arrow along the defined bushtrack up a gentle slope and down a long winding hill on the other side until it comes to the intersection of the Bar trail and Warrawolong road.

(9.54 km) Int of Bar trail and Warrawolong road to Int of Turners and Warrawolong roads
Track: Moderate - road
Distance = 0.4 km Time = 5 mins
Climb = 9 m Descent = -11 m
from the intersection the track follows the Great North Walk arrow down the hardened dirt road which winds along until it comes to the intersection of Turners and Warrawolong roads.

(9.93 km) Int of Turners and Warrawolong roads to Mt Warrawolong Fire Tower
Optional Side Trip: Track: Hard - Service Trail
Distance = 2 km Time = 55 mins
Climb = 251 m Descent = -37 m
From the intersection the track heads north west along the service trail down the long hill and winding around until it comes to the unsignposted intersection of the Mt Warrawolong trail about 400m later.
From the intersection the track heads up the hill, passing through the locked gate 200m up the trail and continuing up the hill, winding all the way up to the top of Mt warrawolong at the fire tower.

At 642m above sea level this is the highest point of the Great North Walk.

(9.93 km) Int of Turners and Warrawolong roads to Signposted Rest Area
Track: Hard - road
Distance = 2.8 km Time = 1 Hrs
Climb = 68 m Descent = -270 m
From the intersection the track follows Turners road as it undulates for a while, dropping down steeply alongside a gully as the rocky trail zigzaggs towards the bottom until it comes to a signposted rest area.

Watagan Creek Campsite

A Great North Walk signposted campsite with plenty of room for a few tents but providing minimal facilities ie. no water, toilets or tables however there is a bench and room for a fire.

Climb = 0 m Descent = -49 m
From the rest area the track follows the Congewai Valley arrow down the rocky trail following the road to the intersection of Watagan Creek road.
